What will you see at the Naranag Temple complex?
The site has two groups of stone temples facing each other about 200 metres apart. They are in the classical Kashmiri style: pyramidal roofs, trefoil arches and carefully fitted stone blocks. A large stone basin fed by a spring sits within the complex. Most of the structures are ruins, yet the setting among forests, meadows and mountains is calm and striking.
Naranag Temple history
Historians say Lalitaditya Muktapida of the Karkota dynasty built the temples in the 8th century and dedicated them to Shiva. The medieval chronicler Kalhana records that earlier kings also worshipped at this spring. The site was once known as Sodartirtha, and its spring gave the village its name. The complex is also called the Wangath temples. Pilgrims on the way to Gangabal Lake have long stopped here to pay their respects first.
